What is the Oculus Go headset?
Released in May 2018, the Oculus Go headset is a completely standalone headset from Facebook’s Oculus Division. The headset has a built-in mobile display, built-in speakers, wireless hand remote, and can allow users to move with 3 Degrees of Freedom. Compared favorably to the Samsung Gear VR, the Oculus Go can run apps from the Oculus Store or created using InstaVR.
Why Publish to Oculus Go?
Oculus Go is great for companies looking for an affordable and mobile headset to show off their immersive VR experiences. Publishing to it is even easier than for Gear VR. Oculus Go is great for a wide range of use cases, with clients indicating they’ll be using it for employee training, sales/marketing meetings, trades show exhibitions, and various projects related to architecture/engineering/construction.
Pros
- Mobile and completely standalone (no issues such as phone overheating or draining battery excessively).
- Nice specs: 32 GB or 64 GB, built-in quality audio, up to 72Hz refresh rate.
- Lower total cost of ownership than Gear VR and most Daydream compatible phones.
- Easy to publish InstaVR-created apps to via two methods, with no Oculus Signature Files required.
- If you’re in a sleep state, after wearing your headset, you can start the VR experience in seconds.
Cons
- Only 3 Degrees of Freedom, so not as potentially immersive as Lenovo Mirage and Vive Focus
- Up to 2.5 hours of battery life while watching video, which isn’t bad, but could be better
- You can’t increase storage.
Features and Benefits
3DoF vs 6DoF
DoF means Degrees Of Freedom, the number of different “directions” that an object can move in 3D space. 3DoF VR headsets can track your head orientation, i.e., it knows where you are looking. The 3 axis are roll, yaw and pitch.
6DoF headsets will track orientation and position, the headsets knows where you are looking and also where you are in space. This is sometimes referred to as roomscale or positional tracking.
Rotation is relatively easy to detect and track, most cellphones have the hardware required – an Accelerometer and Gyroscopes sensors.
Is a 72Hz refresh rate sufficient?
The refresh rate is a number to measure the smooth movement of videos and games, such as display flickering.
It indicates how much the display was found to be rewritten in a second, and it is said that if it is 60 Hz or more, you can usually watch without any discomfort.

How Does InstaVR Improve Oculus Go Publishing?
What Are the Benefits of Using Oculus Go?
Beyond having a simple but robust authoring platform, InstaVR also has a number of features specifically designed for making Oculus Go publishing easier:
- Easily publish to Oculus Go projects you’ve already done for Gear VR, Daydream, iOS/Android.
If you’ve already authored an app for another platform, making it Go compatible is very simple. For Gear VR, in fact, you can use that same .apk file and load it onto the Go using our adb instructions. - Two separate methods of publishing, with no .osig file required.
Using the instructions from our How To Publish to Oculus Go Guide, you can not only use adb methodology for publishing, but also Oculus Store private submission. Distributing via the latter method is easy for Go users distributed globally — as simple as adding their Oculus Developer account email address to your project — and doesn’t require an Oculus Signature File. - InstaVR allows you to create unlimited numbers of Oculus Go projects, without charging you per project.
This allows you to iterate and improve your Go projects over time, without incurring extra costs. You’re only subject to our 100 GB storage limit. - Publish widely using Oculus Store for anyone to download.
Just like you can publish to Oculus Store for Gear VR using InstaVR, you can also do so for the Oculus Go Store. (note: InstaVR can’t guarantee acceptance of your app, and Oculus generally requires your app be more entertainment than commercial in nature)
